Meccano Ferris Wheel
Meccano and toy steam engines just naturally go together, in fact the power plant running this ferris wheelwas actually sold by Meccano. It is a model MEC1 manufactured by Mamod with Meccano decals. This type of unit with the horizontal boiler is one of the last styles of steam engines sold by Meccano, the original steam plants featured a vertical boiler and are now considered collectors items bringing very hefty prices when put on the auction block. |
My nephew and I built this 24" diameter ferris wheel, it originally had a clockwork Meccano motor driving it so my younger grand kids could use it to give their toy figures a ride. It was later adopted to steam driven by a MEC1 steam engine. The wheel is based on six triangles, a six hole bush wheel is used for the hub. Because the wheel was so heavy I bolted the large sprocket to the cross arms for a positive drive. Unfortunately I had to to disassemble the wheel so I don't any more photos showing the gearing of the drive. Made up six of these. Video of Ferris Wheel in Action
